Chris is a Partner at Building Ventures, leading investments in early and growth-stage technology companies in the built environment space. Using his extensive entrepreneurial and operating experience in the software industry, Chris helps to develop and mentor Building Ventures portfolio teams in a variety of ways to drive new levels of growth.
Chris brings deep technical software operating experience to the team following two successful stints as CEO, with Mathsoft, a leading provider of analysis and documentation solutions for engineering enterprises, as well as 3-D modeling software leader SpaceClaim. Prior to Building Ventures, Chris was a member of the Built Environment Investment team at Borealis Ventures, where he led the rapid grow of SpaceClaim, a Borealis portfolio company and a pioneer in 3D mechanical design software, which drove its acquisition by ANSYS, the world’s leading engineering-simulation software company.
Chris started his career working in technical roles in engineering computing, but his 35-year career has encompassed a variety of sales, product management, marketing and general management positions in the US and Europe for application and enterprise software companies, including Olivetti, Lotus Development, Software Publishing, Mathsoft and SpaceClaim.
Previously, Chris led the management buyout of Mathsoft in 2001 and was the company’s CEO until its sale in 2006 to PTC (Parametric Technology Corporation). Before that, he was Senior VP and GM of the Engineering & Education Division of Mathsoft’s former parent company. Under Chris’s leadership, Mathsoft was transformed into a fast-growing and profitable provider of analysis and documentation solutions for engineering enterprises around the world.
Chris was raised in the UK, but has lived in the US for over 25 years and is a citizen of both countries. He holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Oxford and completed executive programs at London Business School and Caltech.
